Understanding Your 2026 Salary Tax Slabs (With Examples)

One of the biggest fears salaried people have about tax is that a higher salary will push them into a bracket where they suddenly lose a huge chunk of their income. The good news? That's not how it works. Pakistan uses a progressive slab system, and once you understand it, your tax becomes far less intimidating.

The 2026 Salary Tax Slabs

For Tax Year 2026 (covering income earned from 1 July 2025 to 30 June 2026), the salary tax slabs are as follows:

Annual Taxable SalaryTax Rate
Up to Rs. 600,0000% (Nil)
Rs. 600,001 – 1,200,0001%
Rs. 1,200,001 – 2,200,00011%
Rs. 2,200,001 – 3,200,00023%
Rs. 3,200,001 – 4,100,00030%
Above Rs. 4,100,00035%

The Key Concept: Each Rate Applies Only to Its Own Band

This is the part most people get wrong. When you move into a higher slab, the higher rate does NOT apply to your entire salary — it applies only to the portion of your income that falls within that specific band. The income below that band is still taxed at the lower rates. This is what "progressive" means.

A Worked Example: Rs. 3,000,000 Salary

Let's say your annual taxable salary is Rs. 3,000,000. Here's how your tax is actually calculated, band by band:

  • First Rs. 600,000 → taxed at 0% = Rs. 0
  • Next Rs. 600,000 (up to 1.2M) → taxed at 1% = Rs. 6,000
  • Next Rs. 1,000,000 (up to 2.2M) → taxed at 11% = Rs. 110,000
  • Next Rs. 800,000 (up to 3.0M) → taxed at 23% = Rs. 184,000
Total tax: Rs. 6,000 + Rs. 110,000 + Rs. 184,000 = Rs. 300,000 on a Rs. 3,000,000 salary.

Your Effective Rate Is Lower Than You Think

In the example above, although the top slab the person reaches is 23%, their actual tax of Rs. 300,000 on Rs. 3,000,000 works out to an effective rate of just 10%. This is almost always the case — your effective (overall) tax rate is considerably lower than the rate of your highest slab. Understanding this should put your mind at ease about earning more.

The Bottom Line

Pakistan's salary tax is fairer than it first appears. You're never taxed at your top rate on your whole income, and a raise will never leave you worse off. To see exactly what you owe on your own salary, try the free FiloTaxes tax calculator — it does the band-by-band maths for you instantly.
